Betty Traister

Eureka- Betty L. Traister, 95, of Eureka, passed away at 12:55 am on September 5, 2016 at Maple Lawn Nursing Home in Eureka.

She was born on September 4, 1921 in Danville, IL to William and Ruth French Trenary. She married Leo "Doc" Traister on March 24, 1946 in Danville, IL. He survives.

Also surviving are two daughters, Toni (Mike) Wittlich of Belleville; Carol (Dave) Cooper of Bourbonnais; four grandchildren, Tara (Bob) Arthur - Bergman; Andrea (Tim) Becherer; Karen (Mark) Wheeler-Lee; Christy Cooper; and seven great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, George Trenary.

Betty was a teacher. She started her career in Gibson City and taught in New Windsor IL, at Eureka College and Eureka District #140. Many former students rembmer "Traister's Rules" for 4 square.

She was a member of the Eureka Christian Church and as a child attended the Danville Christian Church Disciples of Christ. She was a member of the CWF, PEO, AAUW, Womens Board of Eureka College, 20th Century, Woodford County Retired Teachers, Illinois Retired Teachers Association, ENK, Phi Omega Sorority, American Legion Auxiliary and the Eureka Hospital Auxiliary.

Betty loved Eureka College and maintained many ties to the college community. Betty and Leo loved to attend games and many activities at the college.


Funeral services will be held at 11am on Friday September 9, 2016, at the Eureka Christian Church. Rev. Jennie Churchman will officiate. Visitation will be held from 4-7 pm on Thursday at Argo-Ruestman-Harris Funeral Home in Eureka. Per her wishes cremation rites will be accorded following the services and inurnment will be held at a later date in Olio Township Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Betty and Leo Traister Scholarship Fund at Eureka College or to the Eureka Christian Church.
