Kathryn Funk

Eureka-Kathryn E. Funk, 91 of Eureka, formerly of Gridley and Washington passed away at 8:05 am on Wednesday, July 20, 2016 at the Apostolic Christian Home of Eureka.

She was born on October 21, 1924 in rural Congerville the fourth of twelve children to Fred and Leila Reeser Knapp. She married Eugene B. Funk on September 16, 1945 in Eureka. He passed away on November 11, 2007.

Surviving are one daughter, Leila (Bruce) Witzig of Peoria; one daughter-in-law, Lavonne Funk of Eureka; one sister, Mary Steffen of Eureka; six brothers, Clyde (Leanna) Knapp of Bloomfield, IA; Fredrick (Marge) Knapp of Roanoke, IL; Loren (Joan) Knapp; Robert (Jean) Knapp; Gerald (Nancy) Knapp all of Eureka, IL; Kenneth (Phyllis) Knapp of Palmyra, MO; eight grandchildren, and fourteen great-grandchildren. She was very close to her family including her 28 nieces and nephews and 135 great nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, one son, Keith; one sister, Lucille Blunier; two brothers, Maurice and Wilber; and one infant sister, Clara.

She was brought up in a close knit Apostolic Christian home where her brothers and sisters all got along well together and still continue to get together each month to share food and fellowship.

Kathryn graduated from Eureka High School and later Brown Business College in Peoria. She worked for the Illinois State Highway Department in Peoria. After her marriage, she lived on the Funk's grain and dairy farm near Gridley and taught for one year at a country school close to their home. When her children were still in school, Kathryn returned to Illinois State University and received a degree in elementary education and later her Master's degree in Reading. She taught second grade in Gridley specializing in reading for over 28 years. When the farm was sold they moved to Eureka in 1972 and later to Washington in 1978. Kathryn continued to substitute teach in McLean, Tazewell, Woodford, and Peoria Counties.

She was a member of the Washington Apostolic Christian Church where funeral services will be held at 10 am on Tuesday, July 26, 2016. Church ministers will officiate. Visitation will be held from 4-7 pm on Monday at the Goodfield Apostolic Christian Fellowship Hall and from 9-9:45 am before the service on Tuesday at the church. A grave side service will be held at the Goodfield/Congerville Apostolic Christian Cemetery at 1:30 pm on Tuesday.
