Eureka-Lyle E. Smith, 86, of Eureka, IL passed away at 11:08 a.m. on Sunday April 2, 2017 at Select Post Acute Care in Eureka.
Our beloved father's mischievous grin and twinkling blue eyes were retired on April 2, 2017. Lyle Ellsworth Smith was born August 22, 1930 to Alma (Schertz) and Walter Smith. He spent his life devoted to God, his family, and farming. He always said it was honorable to feed the world. In his early days, he studied architecture at Goshen college, liked to road trip around the USA, and had a beautiful tenor singing voice. He was in the Air National Guard during the Korean War, and was an expert Mennonite wood craftsman. He was predeceased by his wife, Charlene (Hoefler) Smith, and his sister Rachel (Lawrence) Ringenberg. He is survived by 3 daughters, Kendra Mickelson (Mike) Schum of Eureka, Leslie (Jeff) White of Eureka, and Jenny Smith of Irvine, CA; he is also survived by his brother, Robert Smith of Lakeland, Florida; late-in-life sweetheart, Clarabelle Springer of Eureka; and five grandchildren - Ali and Courteney Smith, Kayla and Kevin Mickelson, and Hannah White. Lyle had a ridiculously bad sense of humor, and is probably talking to a priest, a minister, and a rabbi right now. We love you. Fly strong.
Memorial services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, April 7, 2017 at the Metamora Mennonite Church. Church ministers will officiate. Visitation will be held at the church before the services from 10:15-11:00 a.m. on Friday. Inurnment will follow services at the Hickory Point Cemetery.
